Gum treatments and Periodontal care. Levittown, NY 11756

Gum disease or Periodontal disease is probably the most common problem every patient has to deal with and is easily prevented. The cause of gum disease is your natural response to the bacteria that normally lives in your mouth under the gum line. To prevent this disease you need to brush and floss daily and have regular dental checkups. Your dental checkup is to examine the teeth for decay and other mechanical problems as well as to remove any hard plaque deposits on the roots of your teeth.

In advanced cases of gum disease it may require deep cleanings below the gum line or surgery to open up the gum remove the plaque deposits (calculus) hardened to the roots. Patients often have the option of having their cleanings done with local anesthesia, “novacaine”, Nitrous Oxide, Oral or Intravenous sedation. All you feel is the same sensation as someone squeezing your hand.

Don't wait until it hurts and be aware of the warning signs. Some of the early warning signs are bleeding gums when you brush or floss, bad breath and red swollen gums. You have a real problem if you have pus between your teeth or you notice your teeth are getting loose and spreading apart or don't fit together the same way they did years ago.

There are many factors that can predispose a patient to gum or periodontal disease. Patients who smoke or chew tobacco are more likely to have periodontal disease because the habit can mask the signs and lower the patients response to infection. Diabetics and medically compromised individuals also have a lowered resistance to infection making periodontal disease more severe and rarely life threatening. Medications can also affect the look and health of your gums.

Just because your parents suffered from periodontal disease doesn't mean you have to. There are some genetic links but the most likely cause is poor home care. Many parents never stressed the importance of regular dental care or the mechanics of brushing and daily flossing. There are some strains of bacteria that are more virulent than others and can be passed along from parent to child in saliva.

Stress is also a major contributor to some forms of periodontal disease. Acute Necrotizing Periodontal or Gingival disease is a very painful condition, usually brought on by stress, that affects the papilla between the teeth. The gums between the teeth are very red and ulcerated. The most common age groups affected are college students, usually during exams, and during a midlife crisis where a parent or spouse is being cared for or sick.

Gum disease is easily diagnosed with dental X-rays and a small probe called a periodontal probe. The probe is gently placed into the space between the gum and the tooth. In the healthy condition the space is usually less than 3 millimeters deep. If you have a gum boil or abscess that space, know as a pocket, is deeper than 3 millimeters and something is stuck under the gum line causing the infection. This foreign material needs to be removed and cleaned out. Most periodontal infections can be managed with professional deep cleanings and minor surgery. Rarely can the infection spread and become a serious medical emergency.

The bottom line is if you suspect you have periodontal disease, gingivitis or dental pain call the Levittown office for an exam and consultation without an obligation.

This is an example of a gum boil, which indicates you may have a periodontal abscess.
