4 tips to a Cavity Free Halloween

Halloween is one of my favorite days of the year. It gives us the opportunity to be creative and a dress up our kids and ourselves into action figures and superstars. It also allows us to indulge our sweet tooth and take a day off from dieting.

There are four things you can do to avoid the cavity creeps and minimize the guilt of eating less than healthy foods. The first choice is to eat Halloween candy and other sugary foods with meals or shortly after mealtime. You should also avoid hard candy and other sweets that stay in your mouth for an extended time. Avoid sticky candies that cling to your teeth. For several days following Halloween I see several patients that loosen their caps or pull out a filling eating very sticky candies. Milk duds are a perfect example of a very sticky candy. Finally drink more water to not only wash away the sugar but also to increase the normal flow of saliva.
